The much awaited debut single by new boyband, One Direction had been eagerly awaited in certain quarters all year. On 10th August 2011, the song, “What Makes You Beautiful,” was first played on Radio 1, officially launching them as a chart act. The band had originally formed on the 2010 series of The X Factor and already developed a huge legion of fans. “What Makes You Beautiful” was released the following day and was Number 1 in Britain and Ireland. It also reached the top ten in several other countries across the world, including Australia and New Zealand. One Direction, which then included two Yorkshiremen, Zayn Malik from Bradford and Louis Tomlinson from Doncaster went on to become the biggest boy band in the world, until their “tempoary” split in March this year.
