In the depths of the night, the people of Hull were thrust into a new way of life. At 3.20am on the morning of 4th September 1939, the first air raid sirens sounded in the city. It proved to be a false alarm and the all clear was given at 4.08am. This was the first of 815 air warning alerts in Hull throughout the Second World War. A bomb was not actually dropped on the city until June 1940. The disruption must have been a terrifying ordeal for those involved..
