On This Day in Yorkshire – July 31st 2011 – The last ever episode of The Royal is screened

Sixties drama, “The Royal,” had enjoyed a run of eight series, before the show was axed in 2011. The trials and tribulations of St Aidan’s Royal in the fictitious town of “Elsinby,” was in fact a combination of Whitby and Scarborough, where the series was filmed. The Royal started in 2003 as a spin-off from the already long-running series of Heartbeat and starred Ian Carmichael, Wendy Craig and Robert Daws. In the final episode, screened at 7pm on July 31st 2011 tragedy struck as Dr Gordon Ormerod (Daws) was stabbed by a pair of surgery scissors and as the battle to save his life ensued, so did the closing credits, leaving the viewers wondering whether he survived or not…
