On this day in Yorkshire: 9th August 1915- Goole is bombed by mistake by the Germans

During the 1st World War there were some air strikes on the East coast of Yorkshire and Hull. On the night of August 8th/9th some L9 Zeppleins were blown off course and bombed Goole instead, mistaking it for its larger neighbour. Tragically sixteen people died in the raid, including six children when the 60 bombs were dropped on the port. A memorial was built for them in 1922 and was restored in 2015 to mark the centenary of this tragic event.
