On This Day In Yorkshire
On this day in Yorkshire: 21st September 1984- Clashes at the Maltby picket line during the Miner’s strike.
The Miner’s strike was in full swing on this day in 1984. This time clashes between striking miners and police made national headlines at Maltby colliery near Rotherham. The violence started when six construction workers, who also had membership of the NUM, were prevented from entering the colliery building by the picket line. Seven hundred police officers and 500 reinforcements were sent as violence ensued. Alternatively the miners felt they were treated in a heavy-handed way by the South Yorkshire force as arrests were made.
