On this day in Yorkshire: 16th September 1993, Footballer, Sam Byram is born

Former Leeds United midfielder, Sam Byram was born on this day in 1993. Although his birth was in Essex, Byram moved up to York and attended Joseph Rowntree School. He played for the school football team and was spotted by Leeds United, who signed him on schoolboy terms. Byram managed to move up through the ranks of the club and signed professional terms in the summer of 2012. The right sided player made his first team debut in a 4-0 win over Shrewsbury in the League Cup on August 11th 2012. He scored his first goal in the next round against Oxford United, a delightful chip over the keeper, which helped cement his place in the first team set up under an impressed Neil Warnock. At the end of that season he swept the board at the club’s annual awards evening, where he won both player, young player and supporter’s player of the year. His form was beginning to attract interest from Premier League clubs. Despite rejecting several offer over the following few seasons, Byram joined West Ham in January 2016. He made 143 appearences for the Whites, scoring 10 goals. Happy birthday Sam!
