It was a momentous day in broadcasting when Yorkshire got its very own ITV franchise and began broadcasting in July 1968. Beamed around the region from its shiny new studios on Kirkstall Road in Leeds, the company would go on to bring some much loved favourites, including Emmerdale, Countdown and Fat Friends.. On its first day of broadcast though viewers enjoyed a trip to Headingley for live coverage of the Ashes Test match, a look at what’s going on around the region, courtesy of a local news programme called “Calendar” and some light entertainment from Bob Monkhouse and his show, “First Night.” The first broadcast would have been in black and white, until full colour pictures were first shown across the ITV network in November 1969.
