A national walkout by Hull dockers as part of a national strike took place on this day in 1972. It was in protest against Edward Heath’s government at the 20,000 jobs which had been lost since 1968. The strike was also in support of the “Pentoville 5,” , who had been sent to prison for breach of the rules when they defied a court order to stop picketing a cold storage company. The dockers strike resulted in the army being called in to receive cargo at ports around the country, including Hull’s docks.
